Tips for Beginners
Choosing & Cutting Mangoes
- Pick ripe mangoes: They should give slightly when pressed and smell fragrant at the stem.
- Cutting made easy: Slice off the “cheeks” around the pit, score the flesh in a crosshatch pattern, then scoop out the cubes with a spoon.
- Too soft? If your mango is very ripe, cut it gently so it doesn’t turn mushy in the salsa.
Handling the Heat
- Jalapeño basics: Remove seeds and membranes for milder heat.
- Want it spicier? Use a habanero — but start with a small amount and taste as you go.
- Avoid chili burn: Wash your hands after chopping peppers or use gloves.
Balancing Flavors
- Taste as you go: Mango sweetness varies. You may need a little extra lime or salt to balance.
- Let it rest: A 10–15-minute rest helps flavors meld beautifully.
- Add crunch: If you like texture, keep the bell pepper pieces slightly larger.
Optional AddIns
- Diced avocado (add right before serving)
- Cucumber for extra freshness
- A pinch of chili powder or Tajín
- A splash of orange juice for extra sweetness
